Kareem Abdul-Jabbar is auctioning off his championship rings and MVP trophies for charity: "When it comes to choosing between storing a championship ring or trophy in a room, or providing kids with an opportunity to change their lives, the choice is pretty simple. Sell it all."

Kareem is good people

[–][CLE] LeBron James BeogarBalken 289 points 8 hours ago

Good guy Kareem.

[–]Raptors IanicRR 694 points 6 hours ago

I’m glad he’s showing this side of him. He had a reputation for being a huge asshole during his playing days (being an outspoken black man in that era did him no favours) and now he’s getting the chance to show that he’s really just a thoughtful and introspective dude.

[–]LARGE_EYEBROWS 494 points 5 hours ago*

That was a reason. This was at the time when Ali refused to serve in Vietnam and the Mexico Olympics raised fists on the medal stand. The black power movement, and the black muslims. This stuff seems like old history now, but it was a tense time, and these guys were speaking for a people and had a lot of weight on their shoulders. Like the guys now, except without the same level of support.

Edit: On top of all of this, recall he was a 20 something kid with microphones in his face. Hard to know what you are supposed to say I'm sure.

[–]DOGH4NDS 52 points 5 hours ago

Outspoken black man AND devout Muslim. Those titles put a target on his back and the media drooled over the possibility of him slipping up. He was unapologetic and a polarizing American figure. Basketball’s Muhammad Ali.

[–]Pistons rblaze09 62 points 5 hours ago

did they really get much support back then?

[–]76ers PhiladelphiaFish 41 points 5 hours ago

Plenty, but not as much as today obviously. Doesn't belittle their actions at all tho, it's hard to stand up for anything, let alone civil rights.

[–]Runt Monkey 174 points 5 hours ago

He's saying the guys back then didn't get the same support but had the same (I would say heavier) burdens.

[–]Casual_OCD 74 points 4 hours ago

Their "burdens" were harder for sure. Civil Rights was still in it's infancy

[–]Nuphonenunamenumetal 92 points 4 hours ago

Civil Rights is still in its infancy

[–][OKC] Steven Adams Ramzaa_ 50 points 5 hours ago

Im gonna hop on here to say. If anyone hasn't, read some of the articles hes writen. Hes a great writer/journalist. Really shows a different side of him that what the media portrayed him to be back in the day.

[–]Pelicans DowntownDeaux 841 points 8 hours ago

2nd Greatest player of all time and barely gets mentioned for it. He did way more than what Kaep didn't but doesn't get nearly the same praise.

[–][DAL] Dirk Nowitzki Mysteriagant 158 points 6 hours ago

Why shit on Kaepernick?

[–]Lakers On_Adderall 128 points 6 hours ago

This is r/nba. Most people here can only communicate through shit talk and hot takes.

[–]Lakers dbadefense1990 7 points 5 hours ago

I find it saddening how Kareem usually isn't in the conversation of NBA GOAT players as Jordan, LeBron, Magic, Bird and Russell.

[–][BRK] Caris LeVert paniledu 736 points 7 hours ago*

Kareem and Ali are on the Rushmore for top level athletes who sacrificed for social justice.

[–]Celtics reefevora 140 points 5 hours ago

How you gonna forget Jackie Robinson like that

[–]NBA kentuckiaki 63 points 5 hours ago

Do you even Rushmore? There's room for more dudes up on that peice.

[–]Bulls Tankwagonshiteymate 12 points 5 hours ago

Mount Rushmore has 4 faces my dude

[–][OKC] Steven Adams Ramzaa_ 18 points 5 hours ago

Bill Russell too

[–]Celtics Mexter-Dorgan 10 points 5 hours ago

pretty sure Bill Russell was on the stage with MLK during the "I Have a Dream" speech.

Kareem’s attitude and thoughtfulness continues to impress me

[–]PentobarbitalandCoke 14 points 5 hours ago

Kareem means generous in Arabic.

[–][LAL] Lamar Odom LakersFan15 174 points 6 hours ago

It's crazy bc it wasn't always like that. He was a known asshole who alienated others. Hence why he never got a coaching job.

Times have changed!

[–]Knicksteamorange3 268 points 5 hours ago

Not really. On a personal level he has always been kind of a jerk and difficult to work with but from a worldview perspective he has always had strong morals.

[–]kaisunc 113 points 5 hours ago

chaotic good

[–]Big__Baby__Jesus 16 points 4 hours ago

Kareem is an introvert who read books in the locker room before games. He wasn't there to make friends or rally the fans. He was there to win games and win championships.

And the best players are always terrible coaches.

[–][MIL] Jabari Parker superdago 9 points 3 hours ago

I’m trying to think of an all time great that ended up a great coach and I’m coming up with pretty much just Zidane. It seems role players tend to make the best coaches.

[–][MIN] Kevin Garnett Starfreeze 8 points 2 hours ago

Johan Cruyff dude come on. He's better than Zidane on both fronts.

————————

[–]Bulls DrSwol 71 points 7 hours ago

Win-win. Some fan gets a cool piece of history, and economically disadvantaged kids get to learn about science, technology, and engineering.

[–]Nuggets AmazingYak9 30 points 7 hours ago

I would never sell something like that. An MVP trophy awarded to me is way more valuable to me than it is to anybody else.

I wouldn't pay 美金100 for somebody else's MVP trophy, but you'd have to offer 美金100M to buy my MVP trophy from me.

[–]mooviemen1215 39 points 6 hours ago

The guys 71 years old, he prob felt the same way as you or even more when he was younger. He's prob lost that sentimental value after so long

[–]Seems Plausible 1429 points 6 hours ago

Can you fuckin imagine having Kareem’s MVP trophy sitting in your display case

[–]Clippers uziair 53 points 6 hours ago

going to be best paperweight in your house.

[–]Mavericks nomnomnompizza 12 points 4 hours ago

Hopefully the Lakers would buy it and put it on display

[–]silentstorm480 607 points 5 hours ago

feverishly checks banking account SHIIIIIIIIIIIT

[–]Trudeaus_Eyebrows 278 points 5 hours ago

I can do 3.50

[–]Bulls thepobv 147 points 5 hours ago

美金3.51... I also make some pretty freaking good garlic bread if Kareem is interested in that.

[–]PM_ME_FAV_RECIPES 62 points 4 hours ago

Recipe pls?

[–]Bulls thepobv 104 points 4 hours ago

kind of a secret but it since I like the /r/nba I'm willing to share that it involves garlic, and bread.

[–]PM_ME_FAV_RECIPES 34 points 4 hours ago

Son of a bitch..

[–]Warriors borntoperform 47 points 7 hours ago

He's a better man than me. I'd want to keep those things for life. They're priceless family heirlooms. Material, yes, but heirlooms.

[–][MIA] Hassan Whiteside Chowrock 538 points 7 hours ago

Someone start a GoFundMe and buy it! Then return it to him!

热火球迷:谁去GoFundMe(世界上最年夜的众筹平台)上倡议众筹呗!

[–]Celtics FromAshyToClassy 16 points 6 hours ago

Why aren't you starting it?

[–][MIA] Hassan Whiteside Chowrock 104 points 6 hours ago

I'm not trust worthy.

[–]Celtics FromAshyToClassy 31 points 6 hours ago

I like the honesty

[–]Suns jkof300 26 points 6 hours ago

Some russian player did this (wasnt for charity) and the buyer returned it. Pretty sure it was money laundering

[–]Thunder GundDownDegenerate 327 points 6 hours ago

But what if he puts it back up for sale?

[–]chiefsfan_713_08 591 points 6 hours ago

Cycle continues, more money for charity?

[–]Spurs barlicgread 33 points 6 hours ago

infinite money

————————

[–][CHA] Kemba Walkermultiple4 99 points 7 hours ago

Ok this is awesome, BUT I just wanna be that guy. Doesn't he already have plenty of money so why doesn't he just keep the rings and trophies since they are nostalgic and once in a lifetime reminders of something you dedicated most of your life to? Like he could just donate to charity separately right? Or find something else to sell. Idk it just seems like a thing he's gonna regret not being able to pass down through his family and look back on it. Like one day he's gonna walk into the room where he keeps this stuff and be like "oh shit why did I sell that?"

[–]dahomie_longstroke 84 points 6 hours ago

He doesn't have as much money as you would think. The "top" tier money that he earned in the 70's and 80's is as much as a 12th man makes nowadays.

he barely has any revenue off commercials/media-related ventures.

Crazy that he went head to head versus Wilt and his wisdom isn't pursued too hard at all. He's like Master Roshi IRL

[–]Pistons royziboy 42 points 6 hours ago

He does have a lot of outside money though, he was in ads long after his career was over and he's written dozens of books.

[–][CHA] Kemba Walker multiple4 14 points 6 hours ago

His net worth is 美金20 million though. I'd assume he has 美金10-15 million of that invested which means he is making 美金200-300k per year just off dividends not counting other income he has from books or endorsements. So he could easily donate out of his pocket.

But I mean if he just decided he didn't want the rings anymore that's his choice. Just not something most people in that situation would do I don't think

[–]Raptors HexxyPoppy 36 points 6 hours ago

One thing about Islam is that they are taught to not be to attached to materialistic things since it won’t really matter once you are dead. So I guess it’s easy for him to decide that.

[–]Raptors BoyWhoSoldTheWorld 17 points 5 hours ago

I used to think I'd never sell either, but really he'll always be a champion. The rings are just physical reminders of an undeniable truth.

At the end of the day, walking by a picture of you and your teammates winning it all, probably tickles the same emotional memories of victory.

[–]Bulls scottishere 24 points 6 hours ago

I really hope an organisation or something buys the stuff, so it can be displayed and appreciated.

Would feel wrong if some Millionaire bought it all and just had it in his own personal collection.
